[Grammar] EPS-TOPIK Chapter 8-1 : The Subject Honorific (-(으)시-)

Chapter 8-1

Verb/Adj. Stem + -(으)시-

Subject Honorific (Pagbibigay-galang sa Paksa)

🛑 WAIT! Grammar is way easier once you know the words — if you haven’t studied Chapter 8-1 Vocabulary (Family) yet, go memorize them first! Today we’ll learn -(으)시-, how to show respect to someone OLDER or HIGHER than you.

🇵🇭 Teka muna! Mas madali ang grammar kapag alam mo na ang mga salita — kung hindi mo pa naaral ang Chapter 8-1 Vocabulary (Family), i-memorize muna ito! Ngayon, aralin natin ang -(으)시-, kung paano magpakita ng respeto sa taong MAS MATANDA o MAS MATAAS ang ranggo sa iyo.

📌 1. What is -(으)시-?

-(으)시- is attached to a verb or adjective to show that the subject of the sentence is someone you should respect — like a grandparent, parent, or boss.
🇵🇭 Idinidikit ang -(으)시- sa isang pandiwa o pang-uri upang ipakita na ang paksa ng pangungusap ay taong dapat mong igalang — tulad ng lolo/lola, magulang, o boss.

[Basic pattern]
✅ Verb/Adj. stem WITH a Final Consonant (받침 O) 👉 + -으시- (e.g., 읽다 → 읽으세요/읽으십니다)
✅ Verb/Adj. stem WITHOUT a Final Consonant, or 받침 ‘ㄹ’ 👉 + -시- (e.g., 보다 → 보세요/보십니다)

💡 TIP: 이/가 and 은/는 also get an upgrade!
When the sentence includes -(으)시-, the subject markers change too: 이/가 becomes 께서, and 은/는 becomes 께서는.
🇵🇭 Kapag may -(으)시- ang pangungusap, nagbabago rin ang mga subject marker: ang 이/가 ay nagiging 께서, at ang 은/는 ay nagiging 께서는.
Example: 아버지께서는 회사원이십니다. (Father is an office worker.)
💡 Remember: “Stem” means removing -다 first! Full explanation in Chapter 4-1.
🇵🇭 Tandaan: tinatanggal muna ang -다 para makuha ang “stem”! Buong paliwanag sa Chapter 4-1.

💡 Quick tip: Same batchim rule as always! (Batchim O = 으시, Batchim X/ㄹ = 시). The hard part isn’t the ending — it’s remembering to also switch 이/가 → 께서. Practice both together!
