Verb Stem + -(으)세요

A Polite Command (Magalang na Utos)

🛑 WAIT! Grammar is way easier once you know the words — if you haven’t studied Chapter 14-2 Vocabulary (Movement Verbs) yet, go memorize them first! Today we’ll learn -(으)세요, how to politely tell someone to do something.

🇵🇭 Teka muna! Mas madali ang grammar kapag alam mo na ang mga salita — kung hindi mo pa naaral ang Chapter 14-2 Vocabulary (Movement Verbs), i-memorize muna ito! Ngayon, aralin natin ang -(으)세요, kung paano magalang na sabihin sa isang tao na gawin ang isang bagay.

📌 1. What is -(으)세요?

-(으)세요 is attached to a verb to command or request the listener to perform an action.
🇵🇭 Idinidikit ang -(으)세요 sa isang pandiwa upang mag-utos o humiling sa tagapakinig na gawin ang isang kilos.

[Basic pattern]
✅ Verb stem WITH a Final Consonant (받침 O) 👉 + -으세요 (e.g., 닦다 → 닦으세요)
✅ Verb stem WITHOUT a Final Consonant, or 받침 ‘ㄹ’ 👉 + -세요 (e.g., 가다 → 가세요, 밀다 → 미세요)

💡 TIP: -(으)세요 vs -아/어 주세요
You met -아/어 주세요 in Chapter 10-2 for making a REQUEST. -(으)세요 is more direct — used for giving a COMMAND or instruction.
🇵🇭 Nakilala mo na ang -아/어 주세요 sa Chapter 10-2 para sa HILING. Mas direkta ang -(으)세요 — ginagamit para mag-utos o magbigay ng instruksyon.
Compare: 문을 좀 닫아 주세요. (Please close the door — a request) vs 창문을 닫으세요. (Close the window. — an instruction)

💡 Remember: “Stem” means removing -다 first! Full explanation in Chapter 4-1.
🇵🇭 Tandaan: tinatanggal muna ang -다 para makuha ang “stem”! Buong paliwanag sa Chapter 4-1.

내일은 일찍 출근하세요.	🇺🇸 Come to work early tomorrow. 🇵🇭 Pumasok nang maaga bukas.
가: 병원이 어디에 있어요? 나: 3층에 있어요. 3층으로 올라가세요.	🇺🇸 A: Where is the hospital? B: On the 3rd floor. Go up to the 3rd floor. 🇵🇭 Nasaan ang ospital? / Nasa ikatlong palapag. Umakyat doon.

💡 Quick tip: Same batchim rule, with one special case — 밀다 (to push) becomes 미세요 (the ㄹ drops before 세요, just like the ‘ㄹ dropping’ rule from Chapter 10-1)!
