Welcome to Day 1 of the Korean Alphabet Master series! Today, you will learn the 5 Basic Vertical Vowels in Korean: ㅣ, ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ. These vertical vowels are called “vertical” because the vowel is written standing up, right next to the consonant. Once you master these 5 Vertical Vowels, you will already be able to read and pronounce dozens of real Korean words. Let’s get started with Teacher Nova!

💡 Learn the Details: The Story of Hangul
1. A Standing Person:
ENG: The letter ㅣ looks like a person standing straight. Think of my name, “Lee”. If you take out the ‘L’, you get the exact sound of ㅣ! Listen to the audio and repeat!
2. Pointing East (Sun Rises):
If you add a stroke to the right of ㅣ, it becomes ㅏ. Imagine a person stretching an arm to the East (Right) where the sun rises. This is a Bright Sound (Yang).
Stretch your arm to the east and push the sound OUT brightly.
- ㅑ : If you add one more stroke to ㅏ, it becomes ㅑ (stretching both arms to the East!).
3. Pointing West (Sun Sets):
If you add a stroke to the left of ㅣ, it becomes ㅓ. Stretch your arm to the West (Left) where the sun sets and gets dark. This is a Deep & Dark Sound (Yin).
Drop your jaw and let the sound fall deep inside, like the setting sun.
- ㅕ : If you add one more stroke to ㅓ, it becomes ㅕ (stretching both arms to the West!).
