“You Must Not…” — Prohibition (Bawal)

🛑 WAIT! Grammar is way easier once you know the words — if you haven’t studied Chapter 29-2 Vocabulary (Rude Behaviors) yet, go memorize them first! Today we’ll learn -(으)면 안 되다 — the opposite of Chapter 26-1’s permission pattern.

🇵🇭 Teka muna! Mas madali ang grammar kapag alam mo na ang mga salita — kung hindi mo pa naaral ang Chapter 29-2 Vocabulary (Rude Behaviors), i-memorize muna ito! Ngayon, aralin natin ang -(으)면 안 되다 — ang kabaligtaran ng pattern ng pahintulot sa Chapter 26-1.

📌 1. What is -(으)면 안 되다?

-(으)면 안 되다 is attached to verbs and adjectives to show that an action or state is PROHIBITED.
🇵🇭 Idinidikit ang -(으)면 안 되다 sa mga pandiwa at pang-uri upang ipakita na BAWAL ang isang kilos o kalagayan.

[Basic pattern]
✅ Verb/Adj. stem WITH a Final Consonant (받침 O) 👉 + -으면 안 되다 (e.g., 먹다 → 먹으면 안 돼요)
✅ Verb/Adj. stem WITHOUT a Final Consonant, or 받침 ‘ㄹ’ 👉 + -면 안 되다 (e.g., 주다 → 주면 안 돼요, 만들다 → 만들면 안 돼요)

In a question, it asks for permission! 마두 씨 휴대폰을 좀 쓰면 안 돼요? (May I use your phone?)

💡 TIP: The exact opposite of Chapter 26-1
-(으)면 안 되다 (prohibition, “not allowed”) is the opposite of -아도/어도 되다 (Chapter 26-1, permission, “allowed to”).
🇵🇭 Ang -(으)면 안 되다 (pagbabawal, “hindi puwede”) ay kabaligtaran ng -아도/어도 되다 (Chapter 26-1, pahintulot, “puwede”).
Compare: 친구에게 반말을 해도 돼요. (allowed) vs 어른들께 반말을 하면 안 돼요. (not allowed)
💡 Remember: “Stem” means removing -다 first! Full explanation in Chapter 4-1.
🇵🇭 Tandaan: tinatanggal muna ang -다 para makuha ang “stem”! Buong paliwanag sa Chapter 4-1.
