[Grammar] EPS-TOPIK Chapter 23-1 : Giving Background Information (-는데/(으)ㄴ데)

Chapter 23-1

Verb/Adj. Stem + -는데/(으)ㄴ데 (Background)

Setting the Scene (Paglalatag ng Sitwasyon)

🛑 WAIT! Grammar is way easier once you know the words — if you haven’t studied Chapter 23-1 Vocabulary (Mail) yet, go memorize them first! Today we’ll learn -는데/(으)ㄴ데, how to give background info before your main point.

🇵🇭 Teka muna! Mas madali ang grammar kapag alam mo na ang mga salita — kung hindi mo pa naaral ang Chapter 23-1 Vocabulary (Mail), i-memorize muna ito! Ngayon, aralin natin ang -는데/(으)ㄴ데, kung paano magbigay ng background info bago ang pangunahing punto mo.

📌 1. What is -는데/(으)ㄴ데 (Background)?

-는데/(으)ㄴ데 is attached to verbs and adjectives to show that the preceding content serves as the BACKGROUND for what follows.
🇵🇭 Idinidikit ang -는데/(으)ㄴ데 sa mga pandiwa at pang-uri upang ipakita na ang naunang laman ay BACKGROUND para sa susunod.

[Basic pattern]
✅ Verbs, 있다/없다 👉 + -는데 (e.g., 먹다 → 먹는데, 있다 → 있는데)
✅ Adjectives WITH batchim 👉 + -은데 (e.g., 많다 → 많은데)
✅ Adjectives WITHOUT batchim, or 받침 ‘ㄹ’ 👉 + -ㄴ데 (e.g., 크다 → 큰, 길다 → 긴)

💡 TIP: Same spelling, different job — coming later!
Just like -아서/어서, you’ll see “-는데/(으)ㄴ데” again in Chapter 26-2 — but that one means “but” (contrast), NOT background info! Same spelling, two different jobs. Context tells you which one is meant.
🇵🇭 Tulad ng -아서/어서, makikita mo ulit ang “-는데/(으)ㄴ데” sa Chapter 26-2 — pero ang kahulugan doon ay “pero” (contrast), HINDI background info! Parehong baybay, dalawang magkaibang gamit. Ang konteksto ang magsasabi kung alin ang ibig sabihin.
💡 Remember: “Stem” means removing -다 first! Full explanation in Chapter 4-1.
🇵🇭 Tandaan: tinatanggal muna ang -다 para makuha ang “stem”! Buong paliwanag sa Chapter 4-1.
